The Otter Youth Circle | Webinar 2 – Otter’s Vulnerability to Climate Change by Anna Loy

The influence of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has increased substantially over the last several decades. Climate and biodiversity emergencies are two aspects of one crisis, with climate change being a main threat to species survival in the medium-long term, both directly and indirectly. Assessing a species’ vulnerability to climate change is crucial to develop effective conservation strategies. Marine and freshwater habitats are some of the most exposed ecosystems to climate change. Otters, being semiaquatic species strictly linked to these ecosystems, suffer multiple impacts from climate change.

In this webinar, Prof Anna Loy shares 1) How climate change affects otters 2) How the otters’ vulnerability to climate change was assessed 3) How forecasts of climate change impacts in the future is incorporated into guidelines for the Red List and Green Status assessments 3) How the impacts of climate change can be mitigated 5) Future challenges. Prof Anna Loy is the Co-Chair of the IUCN SSC Otter Specialist Group. She is also a Full Professor in Zoology, in the University of Molise, Italy.
