Our work
The OSG informs governments and organizations about otter threats and conservation needs, and contributes to the IUCN Red List. We act as a central authority and a resource for governments, researchers, and conservation practitioners to ensure the survival and wise management of all otter species worldwide.
Key functions
- Conservation Leadership: The OSG provides direction and leadership for the conservation of all 14 otter species globally.
- Status and Needs Assessment: It continuously determines and reviews the status and needs of otters, providing crucial data on their populations and habitats.
- Promotion of Research & Management: The group promotes the development and implementation of research, conservation, and management programs by various organizations and governments.
- Information Dissemination: It communicates the conservation status and needs of otters to the world, raising awareness and promoting public support.
- Contribution to IUCN Red List: The OSG’s work informs and contributes to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, the most comprehensive source on the global conservation status of species.
- Collaboration with Networks: The OSG collaborates with other groups and organizations within the IUCN network to align efforts in research, education, and policy for otter protection and habitat preservation.
